Du'a (Invocation) Is Worship and is Of Two Types: Du'a of Need and Du'a of Worship

B15M1LL4H-

Worship ( العبادة) is defined as:

A comprehensive term that incorporates everything that Allaah loves and is pleased with from the statements and actions, both inward and outward.
And thus, worship is of many different types, and they are mentioned in the Qur'an. And when something is declared to be worship, then it is not permissible for it to be directed to other than Allaah, and such worship occurs either in the heart, upon the tongue or through the limbs, all the forms and types of worship fall into any of these three categories.

Du'a (invocation) is worship
From its proofs are the saying of Allaah:

 فَادْعُوا اللَّهَ مُخْلِصِينَ لَهُ الدِّينَ

So, call you (O Muhammad and the believers) upon (or invoke) Allah, making (your) worship pure for Him (Alone)... (Ghafir 40:14)
Ibn Katheer commented:

Meaning, make your worship and your invocation purely and sincerely for Allaah alone, and oppose the pagans in their way and their religion.
And the pagans invoke others besides Allaah, hoping for their intercession or seeking them as a means of approach to Allaah, and Allaah refuted this in the Qur'an, and ordered that only He be invoked.
And also the saying of Allaah:

 ادْعُواْ رَبَّكُمْ تَضَرُّعًا وَخُفْيَةً

Invoke your Lord with humility and in secret... (Al-A'raf 7:55)
And also the saying of Allaah:

 وَأَنَّ الْمَسَاجِدَ لِلَّهِ فَلَا تَدْعُوا مَعَ اللَّهِ أَحَدًا

And the mosques are for Allah (Alone), so invoke not anyone along with Allah. (Al-Jinn 72:18)
Ibn Katheer comments:

The Most High says, commanding His slaves that they single Him out in arena of His worship and that none is invoked alongside Him...
And Ibn Jareer at-Tabari comments:

ولا تشركوا به فيها شيئا , ولكن أفردوا له التوحيد , وأخلصوا له العبادة

...[meaning], and do not associate anyone as a partner to Him therein, but rather single Him out with Tawhid (Pure Monotheism) and make worship purely and sincerely for Him (alone)...
And also the saying of Allaah:

 فَلَا تَدْعُ مَعَ اللَّهِ إِلَهًا آخَرَ فَتَكُونَ مِنَ الْمُعَذَّبِينَ

So invoke not with Allah another ilah (god, deity) lest you be among those who receive punishment. (Ash-Shu'ara 26:213)
And also the saying of Allaah:

 وَمَنْ أَضَلُّ مِمَّن يَدْعُو مِن دُونِ اللَّهِ مَن لَّا يَسْتَجِيبُ لَهُ إِلَى يَومِ الْقِيَامَةِ وَهُمْ عَن دُعَائِهِمْ غَافِلُونَ وَإِذَا حُشِرَ النَّاسُ كَانُوا لَهُمْ أَعْدَاء وَكَانُوا بِعِبَادَتِهِمْ كَافِرِينَ

And who is more astray than one who calls (invokes) besides Allýh, such as will not answer him till the Day of Resurrection, and who are (even) unaware of their calls (invocations) to them? And when mankind are gathered (on the Day of Resurrection), they (false deities) will become enemies for them and will deny their worshipping. (Al-Ahqaf 46:6)
And there are many similar verses in this regard, through which it is firmly established that du'a (invocation) is worship and thus is not to be directed except to Allaah alone.
Calling Upon Someone In A Matter In Which They Have Ability
All of the above verses are in reference to supplication (du'a) in such matters that only Allaah alone has the power over and thus whoever invoked others besides Allaah for that in which only Allaah has power over, then he has committed shirk (associationism) and kufr (disbelief), irrespective of whether the one being called upon is living or dead.
As for invoking a living person for that in which he is capable, such as saying, "O so and so, feed me", or saying, "O so and so, give me drink", or saying, "O so and so, help me to carry these goods" and so on, then there is no harm in this.
And whoever called upon one who is dead, or who is absent (i.e. not present there and then) with the likes of these requests (food, drink, assistance and so on), then he has committed shirk (associationism), because the dead and the absent are not able to provide the likes of these affairs, and a person would not have called upon them for these things except due to his belief that they are able to provide these things whilst being absent, and if he had not believed this, he would not have called upon them, rather he would have called upon Allaah alone.
Du'a Is Of Two Types: That Of Need and That of worship
The Scholars explain that du'a is of two types, the first is an explicit request made such as "O Allaah, forgive me!", and "O Allaah provide for me!" and "O Allaah, show mercy to me!" and "O Allaah guide me!" and "O Allaah, grant me a righteous spouse", and "O Allaah grant me success!" and so on. All of these are specific requests, for specific needs and this is called (دعاء المسألة), "The invocation of need". This type of du'a is accompanied with other forms of worship, particularly those of the heart, such as love, hope, aspiration, reliance, awe and the likes.
As the for second, (دعاء العبـادة), "the invocation of worship", then this covers every act of worship in the sense that when you perform any act of worship, whether it is inward, outward, verbal or non-verbal, then even if you are not expressing it explicitly with your tongue, you are nevertheless, by way of the performance of that action, asking from Allaah. For example, by giving charity, which is worship, you are asking, by way of your action, even if you do not verbally express it, for reward, mercy and forgiveness and the likes. And the same applies to all other actions of worship. Thus, this is called "the invocation of worship", in the sense that you are invoking Allaah (silently) through the actions you are performing.
Now both of these two types of worship are intended by the verses that are mentioned above, and when you refer back to the classical commentaries of the Qur'an you find that they use du'a, interchangeably with ibaadah, because that is exactly how it has been used in the Qur'an.
Prohibition of Invoking Others Besides Allaah
From the above, everything that occurs in the Qur'an of the command to invoke Allah and Him alone, praising of those who invoke only Him alone, the prohibition of invoking others, and the absence of any benefit of invoking others besides Allaah, as occurs frequently in the Qur'an, then this applies to both forms of invocationmentioned above.
The issue of invocation is also connected to other forms of worship such asisti'aanah (seeking aid), isti'aadah (seeking refuge) and istighaathah (seeking rescue), and these will be dealt with separately in other articles. InshaAllaah.

Explanation of Tawheed

B15M1LL4H- Fakhr ud-Din ar-Razi on Grave worship and intercession
Fakhr ud-Din ar-Razi (d. 606H) has some commentary upon the saying of Allaah, the Most High, in Surah Yunus, which is a description of the reason used by the pagans to justify their worship of other deities besides Allaah:
And they worship besides Allah things that hurt them not, nor profit them, and they say: "These are our intercessors with Allah." Say: "Do you inform Allah of that which He knows not in the heavens and on the earth?" Glorified and Exalted be He above all that which they associate as partners with Him! Yunus (10):18

An explication of Tawheed: Islamic Monotheism.

B15M1LL4H - Allahumma bismika ayha wa amutoh....

In order to truly understand Islam, one must understand the fundamentals of Tawheed.
InshaAllah this will certainly strengthen Emaan and guard one from unknowingly or unwittingly comitting the gravest of sins; Shirk (associating others with God/ polytheism). The works of Abu Ameenah Bilal Philips will be used for this purpose, inshaAllah.

Eradicating Shirk...

B15M1LL4H- What was the first advice on Luqman’s list of admonitions for his son? To stay away from shirk. Allaah subhanahu wa ta`ala says in soorah Luqman:

“And, when Luqman said to his son while he was instructing him, “O my son, do not associate [anything] with Allaah . Indeed, association [with him] is great injustice.”

We know that every thing is known by its opposite. So in order to eradicate shirk - of any level, whether major or minor – from our hearts we have to be able completely grasp the understanding of Tawheed, and what it means to be a slave of Allaah. Ibn Taymiyyah rahimahullaah has given us a very concise elucidation of `Uboodiyyah [servitude to Allaah]. He says:

“The heart is inherently dependent on Allaah in two ways: from the point of view of worship, which is the ultimate goal, and from the point of view of seeking His help and relying upon Him, which are the means to that end. The heart cannot be sound, or succeed, or find joy, or be happy, or feel pleasure, or be good, or be at peace, or find tranquility, except by worshipping its Lord, loving Him and returning to Him. Even if it attains all that it can enjoy of created things, it will not feel at peace or find tranquility, because it has an inherent need for its Lord, for He is the focus of its worship, love and seeking, and this is the only way to attain joy, happiness, pleasure, peace and tranquility.

For if a person is helped to attain what he loves, seeks, desires and wants, but he does not worship Allaah, he will never achieve anything but sorrow, regret and suffering. He can never be free of the pain and hardship of this life except through loving Allaah sincerely, so that Allaah becomes his ultimate desire and he loves Him for what He is, and he loves anyone or anything else only for His sake, and he does not love anything for its own except Allaah. If he does not achieve this (level of love), he has not properly understood the true meaning of “La illaha ill Allaah” or of Tawheed or of Uboodiyyah or of loving Allaah. There is something lacking in his Imaan and Tawheed, and he will suffer pain, regret and anguish accordingly.”

Remember, that the foundation of all our actions is Tawheed, and that in turn is directly related to Ihsaan (perfecting one’s actions). Ihsaan is an integral part of our deen especially in relation to the tazkiyyah (purification) of our souls and is directly related to our Imaan, which is again, linked to Tawheed. Hence, if our Imaan is sound, our deeds will be sound. There are ofcourse varying levels of Ihsaan, and the highest is that in which our actions are done in the state of mushaahadah (witnessing), which means to worship Allaah as if we see Him. The more a person’s well-grounded in his knowledge of Allaah’s Oneness, His Names and attributes, the easier it would be for him to attain the station of mushaahadah.

Our efforts throughout this month, insha’Allaah, should be on attaining that level and if not, then atleast the recommended level (muraaqabah) which is worshiping Allaah as if He sees us.

So before embarking on this long and grueling journey, make sure your beginning is not shaky. Below are some tips on how to solidify Tawheed in your heart and to eliminate any remnants of shirk.

1. Prior to starting any job, work, chore, worship, etc.. remember to purify your intention and to make it solely for Allaah.

2. Read up on the different aspects of Tawheed, analyze them and apply them to your daily life.

3. Learn, memorize and understand the names and attributes of Allaah subhanahu wa ta`ala. When making du`aa, call Allaah by His lofty names.

4. Furthermore, have certainty that no one can answer your prayers except Him. Shaykh `Abdur-Rahman ad-Dimashqiyya said: “How could such person submit himself to any power on earth while he knows that all which concerns him is entirely in the hands of the Creator of the heavens and the earth? How could he ever submit himself to any master who has risen from the dust? This doctrine and belief in qadar is sufficient to remove all traces of faint-heartedness and cowardice from the heart.”

5. Witness Allaah’s Names and Attributes in His creation. For example, when you see someone sinning, or find yourself committing a sin then remind yourself that Allaah is Shadeed al-`Iqaab, i.e. Severe in Punishment).

6. Make it a habit to enumerate Allaah’s many blessings on you before going to sleep. Make a list if you have to, and this will further ingrain the Tawheed of Allaah in your heart.

7. Contemplate on the creation of Allaah, the universe and everything it contains. Try to spend atleast 30 minutes a day if you have a very busy schedule and ponder. Just seclude yourself for that half hour, sit on your porch in silence, go to your backyard or simply take a walk out, and look at the sky above you, compare the vastness of the sky with the tiny twinkling stars you see, remind yourself of who created them. The best time for this is just before fajr and/or after maghrib when the lights go out and its easier to find some calm, quiet time.

8. Remember Allaah often. Mu`adh ibn Jabal radiyAllaahu `anh used to say to his companions: “Let us sit still for an hour so as to strengthen our belief.” If you don’t have your adkhaar memorized, carry a mus-haf and a copy of Hisnul-Muslimwith you wherever you go and make sure to seize any idle moment to recite from it.
B15M1LL4H- Every Muslim should have a good, clear and sound understanding of Tawheed..(Islamic Monotheism) in order to gain a better grasp of Islam and to be safe from the dangers of committing Shirk, which is indeed the gravest of Sins.
